Making a Ripple in People’s Lives… Since 1997
Helping people to improve their lives and become the person that they are destined to be is the very essence of East Coast Karate Institute’s mission. Our goal is to change people’s lives and we want people to leave here as a better person than they were when they first walk through the door.
This philosophy was first implemented and continues through to this day by East Coast Karate Institute’s dearly missed late founder, Master Michael DiPietro. In order to understand what we are about, we must first tell you where we began.
Master Michael DiPietro was a truly inspirational man, who personally guided and mentored every instructor currently teaching at our school. We believe that this is one of the biggest reasons we offer the quality of service that we do. Master DiPietro opened the studio in 1997 at the young age of 21, quickly establishing a phenomenal program with a solid sense for business.
His genuine interest and care for each of his students and their families has left an immeasurable impact in their lives to this day, as a personal mentor, trainer and genius when it came to running a martial arts business. He personally mentored and trained all of the instructors that work for East Coast Karate Institute and the business practices and systems he established are still being used today.
At the age of nine, Michael took karate lessons and told his father that he wanted to own his own studio one day, which he did by the time he was twenty-one. Enrollment grew to 410 students, with mind-blowing growth not just because of his exceptional martial arts and teaching ability but because he cared. That’s it.
Michael cared and loved what he did so much, that he took interest in every single kid that walked through the door. He sincerely wanted to make a difference in each and every child’s life. The parents felt it. The vibe was there. More came through referrals of friends and family members. They came in droves, as Master DiPietro not only took interest in their karate skills; but in their grades and other tough issues that his students had to face.
He lent a comforting ear even to the parents, who also may have faced different hardships in their personal lives such as unemployment or divorce. He sincerely wanted to help in any way possible.
Master DiPietro’s favorite phrase "make a difference" came out of his mouth thousands of times, which is exactly what he did with East Coast Karate Institute. Despite his diagnosis of cancer in 2007, Master DiPietro worried and cared more about his own family than himself. The line at his memorial service was comparable to a line you would see at the grand opening of a brand new ride in August at Disney World, with a steady stream of people who came to pay their respects for a man who had touched the lives of everyone there in a special way.
East Coast Karate Institute provides martial arts instruction to students throughout the Delaware County. Our focus is a traditional Korean style of martial arts, called Tang Soo Do. Tang Soo Do is designed to develop individual character, mental strength, integrity and respect for others, which has been its fundamental way ever since its origination in Korea over 2,000 years ago.
This ancient style of martial arts uses empty hand, foot and weapon fighting based on the scientific use of the body in self defense. Technically, Tang Soo Do applies the principles of yielding, circular motion and penetrations to target the weakest points of an opponent. Its reputation for superior kicking techniques and leg development is unsurpassed.
East Coast Karate Institute prides itself on providing high quality instruction, from passionate and highly trained instructors. We believe that through our program, students can develop very important life skills such as self-control, self-discipline, respect, confidence, positive body awareness and a drive to excel in all areas of life by always pushing themselves to strive for high levels of performance; both on the karate floor and within their day-to-day lives.
These are skills that will make them not only great martial artists, but that will also equip them with character attributes to carry through in all areas of their lives.
One of Master DiPietro’s favorite metaphors was, “Go out and make a ripple today!” Like a stone that makes a ripple after being thrown into a pond, East Coast Karate Institute strives to make a ripple in the lives of every student that sets foot through our door.
We encourage you to come by the studio and talk to us in person, or contact us to see why East Coast Karate Institute is simply more than just a few martial arts lessons, it is guaranteed to be a life-transforming experience that you will never forget!
Master Stumm started his training in the martial arts when he was 12 years old.
He started his training at Shin Karate Institute in Philadelphia. PA, and became a member of the SWAT team when he was a blue belt, already assisting in teaching classes.
In 1997 he came to teach for Master DiPietro when he opened East Coast Karate Institute that year. From that point on Mr. Stumm has been a full time instructor, devoting his time and energy to the school. He enjoys being a positive influence in the lives of the students who come here, as his instructors were for him.
He feels that he owes a great deal to karate as it helped to keep him out of trouble and off the streets when he was younger.
He tested for his 1st degree Black Belt in 1996, when he was 15 years old. After accomplishing that, he set his sights on 2nd degree Black Belt, which he obtained at the age of 17 in 1998. He then went on to receive his 3rd degree black belt in 2001. October 2012 he was promoted to 4th degree black belt and just recently was promoted to Master's Belt.
